How to play wari

Press «Learn» for the rules shown on the board, move by move.

From the book's pages

• The board has six bowls on each side and an extra bowl at each end. Each of the twelve bowls starts with four pieces.
• Take all the pieces from a bowl on your side. Drop them one by one into the following bowls, against the sun. That means anticlockwise, and to the right as seen from your side.
• If the pieces go all the way round, you skip the bowl you emptied. It stays empty until the next move.
• If the last piece lands in a bowl on your opponent's side holding one or two, it makes two or three. Those you capture, and they go into your extra bowl.

Filled in

The right edge of the page is cut off in the picture, so these rules are ordinary wari and not read from the book.

• The bowls just before it on the opponent's side are captured too, as long as each of them holds two or three.
• If a move would take all of the opponent's pieces, the pieces stay where they are.
• If the opponent is empty, you must give pieces if you can.
• First to 25 of the 48 wins. 24–24 is a draw.
• If there are no legal moves, or the game goes round in circles, each player takes the pieces on their own side.
