How to play peralikatuma

• Peralikatuma is a version of alquerque played in Ceylon. Each player has 23 pieces, set up as in figure B: the two rows nearest you, the tip of the arm to the left, and the whole of the arm behind you and the arm to the left. The three innermost points on the middle row are empty.
• The players move one piece each in turn, and each piece may go in any direction along the lines to the next intersection.
• The rules are otherwise the same as in alquerque: if one of your pieces stands directly opposite one of the opponent's, and the point behind it is empty, you jump over it and take it. Several jumps one after another are allowed. If you could have captured and did not, the opponent has the right to take your piece.
• The player who captures all of the opponent's pieces wins.

• Each arm is a triangle with its tip at the middle of the square's side, with a cross line, a centre line and the two sides. The sides of the arm run straight on into the square's diagonal lines, so a jump over the tip follows them. The home-made board in the photograph has more lines in the arms; the pilot follows the figure the rules refer to.

My choices

What the book does not say is filled in as in the alquerque pilot. Say so if anything should be different.

• Light begins when no one chooses otherwise.
• The right to take a piece applies to the piece that could have captured, and it is taken before you move yourself. You choose whether to use the right. If someone stops a chain of jumps early, nothing is taken.
• Pieces you jump over stay until the move is finished: the same piece cannot be jumped twice, and you cannot land on its point.
• A player who cannot move has lost.
• The same position three times, or sixty moves without a capture, is a draw.
