How to play solitaire
From the book's pages
A square board with 33 holes, the traditional English version; French players usually use a board with 37 holes. A game for one person — solitaire means «one who lives alone».
The most popular way is the centre-hole game: the pegs are set up in every hole except the middle one. A peg is moved by jumping backwards, forwards or sideways, but not diagonally, over another peg, which is then removed from the board. The game should end with the last peg on the board standing in the centre hole.
If you get stuck, you can follow the system at the bottom of the page: number the holes as in figure A and move like this: 15 to 17, 28 to 16, 21 to 23, 24 to 22, 7 to 21, 21 to 23, 26 to 24, 33 to 25, 18 to 30, 31 to 33, 33 to 25, 6 to 18, 13 to 11, 8 to 10, 1 to 9, 16 to 4, 3 to 1, 1 to 9, 18 to 16, 16 to 4, 4 to 6, 6 to 18, 18 to 30, 29 to 17, 10 to 24, 23 to 25, 10 to 18 and 19 to 17.
My choices
The book's list, played as it stands, stops at the fourteenth jump: «8 to 10» is not possible, because hole 10 is still full. The list also has only 28 jumps where 31 are needed, so some must be double jumps that are not written out. «Solution» therefore shows a solution the app has worked out itself — one of many.
«Hint» lights up a jump that still leads to one peg in the centre, if there is one from the position you are in; otherwise it says so.
The holes are numbered as in figure A: down each column from the left, 17 in the centre. Tap a peg, then the hole it should jump to.
